Oodles of Cavoodles
There is no doubt that Cavoodles are one of Australia’s most popular breeds, making up 15% of all dogs across the Nation. There are so many reasons why Cavoodles are a popular choice. Here are just some reasons of why they are the best….they:
- Are a Hypoallergenic dog as they don’t malt
- Have the sweetest of temperaments;
- Are typically easy to train
- Make great family pets as they are good with kids
- Don’t require a serious amount of exercise
- Make great lap dogs
A Cavoodle is a cross between a Poodle (typically a toy variety) and a King Charles Spaniel or Cavalier, hence Cavoodle.
The history of the Cavoodle
While we love to claim the Cavoodle as our most popular breed in Australia, the Cavoodle, was actually first bred in the U.S. in the 1950s. Breeders aimed to create a hypoallergenic dog by crossing a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel with a Poodle, resulting in the beloved Cavoodle we know today.
The Cavoodle is a favourite breed to groom and that’s especially so for Amber, our Blue Wheelers Support person in Queensland.
“I love this breed because they are usually very friendly and obliging little dogs- easy to do almost anything with and I like their small to medium size”. Amber has her own Cavoodle, Shelley who featured in a starring role in one of Blue Wheelers Training videos. She was so compliant and well behaved. Goodness, she deserved an Oscar.
What are the unique aspects in grooming the Cavoodle?
Cavoodles can be so many different colours, sizes and coat types ranging from curly, wavy, wool, fleece or even straight coat. This will largely depend on the pawrents of the litter. Curly and wavy can be more taxing for any groomer as they do tend to matt more easily.
What type of products should be used on Cavoodles when grooming them?
Blue Wheelers Herbal shampoo works really well on any Oodle and Amber says she like to apply a detangler to the ears and tails for easier brushing and a fluffy finished look.
Curly coats do really well with the detangler applied by spray bottle after the bath, brushed through and then blow dried. This keeps them nice and fluffy and allows them to live up to their name sake of “Floof Ball” or Floof for short.
How often should we be grooming our Cavoodles?
Cavoodles should be groomed every 6-8 weekly. Shorter clips can be spaced out a week or 2 more if desired, and longer Comb Clips should be groomed 4-6 weekly if possible.
What will happen to our Cavoodles if they are not groomed regularly?
Like most long haired breeds, if a Cavoodle isn’t groomed regularly the coat can get matted very easily, especially the curlier coats. Owners can prevent this by combing their dogs’ coat twice weekly. This works best when they are conked out in their beds or with a small supply of Treats on hand.
